Abstract:
New ideas and technologies cause new educational reforms with the aim of improving the educational system and curriculum and develop modern teaching models. The teacher is given an opportunity to select and apply the most reliable and effective teaching methods, teaching contents, sources of knowledge and teaching aids. A number of empirical studies point to the model of "flipped classroom" as an efficient way of teaching and learning sciences in primary school. "Flipped classroom" is a model in which students are introduced new content at home and later explore it in greater depth in the classroom through examples, discussions, experiments etc. Instead of teaching, the teacher provides various activities for students and creates a collaborative and exploring atmosphere in the classroom. The activities are student-centered and the teacher is a facilitator in accomplishing the objectives and learning outcomes. Whether the flipping will be fruitful or not depends on the selection of the topic and the created materials and activities. A review of teaching material for the application of flipped classroom model in biology classes in primary school suggests that the material is scarce and therefore insufficient for successful application of this model in teaching practice. The paper presents the main features and values of flipped biology teaching and provides an example of organizing a biology lesson in primary school. Greater accessibility of examples of good practice provides greater support for teachers to apply innovative models of teaching, such as flipped classroom, to rank their teaching at a higher level of complexity and adjust it to the individual needs of students.
