Abstract:
Reading as a leisure activity is one of the reception activities in reading comprehension. It includes creative texts, different forms of literature, magazine and newspaper articles, blogs, or biographies, among other types of text – depending on one’s interests. (CEFR, 2020). Because the results of reading literacy in the Slovak Republic are not satisfactory, it is necessary to motivate students to read for pleasure at home even more and be open towards new literary genres and audio-visual materials. It is the role of a teacher to get students acquainted with texts which raise their literacy prospects through using extensive reading in the English language classroom. The paper deals with the topic of extensive reading which also covers literary circles, book clubs, and graded readers. The aim of the paper is to examine the content and formal focus of extensive reading for teens and adults, its benefits, and its use in the teaching process. Furthermore, it brings an overview of visual literary texts that are appealing to contemporary readers and elaborates exercises aimed at comprehension and interpretation of texts.
