EXPERIENCE OF ON-LINE PLATFORM USAGE FOR LEARNING ACADEMIC ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract:
The present-day English language has become the language of international scientific conferences. Students should be able to present the results of their investigations to conference participants from different countries. Thus, students should have professional and academic skills in English. The aim of Academic English is not only to improve their English level but also to acquaint them with the language skills needed for academic environment .To give the students an opportunity to take part in such events is actually to teach students the Academic English language. In this case, they would be able to read papers in their professional field, to present results of their researches in a right way, to express their thoughts to conference participants from different countries in the written and oral form.
The authors of the paper show the state of affairs at National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University according to implementation of the educational on-line platform Tool KITs in the study process to develop academic skills.This on-line course has multimedia activities. “All learning activities are supported by answers, examples, explanations that are helpful for independent study. The aim of creating on-line environment is a practical usage of academic English skills by the students. The Department of Foreign Languages of the Institute of Humanities, Social Sciences and Technologies TPU organizes the Research Student Forum “StudFess” in English with the following events:
- Academic English Contest;
- Scientific conference “Economics and Social Sciences” with further publication in “Journal of Economics and Social Sciences” (Russian Science Citation Index).
To analyse the effectiveness of on-line platform usage we asked students to take part in the study field from October to December in 2015.
The participants of the study were 28 third and fourth-year students of Tomsk Polytechnic University.
In conclusion the authors present the results of the short study after implementation of the on-line platform and practical results of learning academic English by the students.Keywords:
