Abstract:
The release of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for free use has caused a paradigm shift in various domains, including in education. The use of these tools in educational institutions has raised concerns regarding their utilization by students and the potential impacts on learning.
Given this situation, a private university in Mexico has expressed its support for the use of these tools due to their value in enhancing students' professional training.
A pilot study was conducted to integrate strategies for the educational use of generative AI, specifically ChatGPT and Dall-e in 21 undergraduate-level courses in the spring semester 2023. This study had an impact on 3,338 students from various disciplines.
The professors, guided by a team of pedagogical experts, designed innovative learning activities for their respective courses, where students were intentionally required to use generative AI. The purpose of these activities was to promote ethical and responsible use of AI tools, as well as to encourage critical thinking when using them.
The results of this pilot study are favorable, as they indicate that both students and professors find the use of generative AI in education beneficial to develop skills for its correct and responsible use within an ethical framework, as well as to foster critical thinking in the teaching-learning process.
The intention of this article is to describe the methodology for accompanying Faculty in the design and implementation of strategies for the educational use of generative AI tools and to present the results obtained from the pilot study.
