Abstract:
On the basis of Higher Education experience we have considered the importance of communicating the students basic topics concerning the use of chemical substances, laboratory material and safety regulations, as a previous step to laboratory experimentation. Therefore we have developed in Power Point audiovisual material, including a laboratory safety guide and laboratory equipment.

The safety guidelines show the potential danger the students are exposed, the disposal of chemicals and the location and operating procedures of all safety equipment in case of emergency.

Concerning the laboratory material, several images of laboratory glassware, heating systems, distillation units… are shown.

Students come from diverse backgrounds and have various levels of knowledge. Emphasizing the importance of safety and health considerations by devoting some class time to these areas should help. Moreover it is important to have a relation of the laboratory material and equipment frequently used in food analysis.

The didactic material will facilitate the experimental work, saving time and preventing accidents with impact on health and environment due to an inadequate management of dangerous chemicals.

This tool will enhance the transference of laboratory safety knowledge within the frame of the University Education.
