Abstract:
Needs analysis is an important tool in evaluating language learner needs. If these needs are relevantly and properly analyzed, the whole educational process can become more efficient and provide better academic performance as a result. The paper focuses on the modern image of a typical University student, and describes the dynamics of its evolution. Within the research, we conduct a learner needs assessment to better understand students’ social and academic background, reveal their language learning aptitude as well as the attitude of modern Russian youth to conventional teaching methods. EFL teachers today find it beneficial to conduct needs analysis to find gaps in students’ academic background and make sure the teaching methods and training process in general address the students’ particular needs and individual learning styles. Due to the technical progress and rapidly changing modern society, the approach to university learning and teaching undergoes significant changes. The image of a modern student determines different rules and leads to the appearance of a new image of a teacher, thus, fostering new teaching methods. According to the analysis of modern language learner needs, we highlight the importance of introducing innovative teaching methods which can meet the needs of students and tackle important problems.
