Abstract:

Covid-19 spread vary quickly and threatened faculty and students lives early 2020. In order to continue faculty teaching and students studying while avoiding Covid-19 we were forced to change from the traditional face-to-face teaching model to an online teaching immediately. How effectively teaching students online and guaranteeing higher education quality were critical issues. We have developed a sequence of videos and corresponding practice questions to assist students in learning the contents of programming languages course through online education. Thirty-four lecture videos have been developed to cover all ACM required topics for our undergraduate programming languages course. Forty practices questions have also been developed to help students develop an understanding of the topics. Three projects were created to allow students to use learned knowledges to solve real life problems. These videos, practice questions and projects have been used for an undergraduate Program Languages course since fall 2020 in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina A&T State University. Our experience exhibits that using these videos, practice questions and projects helped students to not only better understand the concepts of program languages through online study, but also gain significant skills to develop real life projects. Students’ feedbacks are very positive. They reflected that these videos and practice questions are very valuable in their online education experience. They can repeatedly listen and watch the videos anywhere at any time, do practice questions multiple times, and discuss project questions with other students online.
