Abstract:
The aim of this study is to provide for an example on the utilization of the Planning Implemantation Evaluation (PIE ) model concerning an ICT integrated, effective mathematics instruction. The model was developed by examining how ICT integration is put into practice. In line with this purpose, the research was established on three bases as; effective mathematics instructions, ICT integration and 5E learning cycle, and, a learning environment prepared according to these three bases, in the context of design based research for the model development process.

This study was conducted at Hacettepe University, Elementary Mathematics Education Department, with 38 male and 9 female, in total, 47 pre-service elementary mathematics teachers. All participants prepared lesson plans which aimed at ICT integration for effective mathematics instruction, in accordance with learning objectives through the semester. The study was conducted as a design – based research model.

The data was collected throughout 12 weeks, to enable for the constant improvement of the designs, and were evaluated through ICT Integration Checklist, Effective Mathematics Instruction Checklist, and 5E Learning Cycle Checklist which were all developed by the researcher. Additionally, all courses were recorded by video and pre-service teachers’ reflection papers were obtained.

The results revealed that the learning environment, which was created by based on effective mathematics instruction, ICT integration and 5E learning cycle had positive contributions to the process of preparing lesson plans. All the variables of the process are taken into consideration and, as a result; a model involving “Planning-Implementation-Evaluation (PIE)” for implementing ICT integration has been proposed.
