Abstract:
This paper describes the introduction of the response surface methodology in a postgraduate course taught at the Universitat Politècnica de València. This case study is carried out within the framework of predictive models for the optimization of concrete structures that are the subject of the master's degree in concrete engineering. This course introduces students to methodologies such as the optimization of structures through the application of algorithms, other concepts such as multi-criteria decision making and design of experiments, and other methods such as the response surface to obtain optimal results. In this case study, a design solution is obtained for a concrete wall whose objective is to reduce the impact produced by CO2 emissions in its construction. To apply this methodology, students must use specific software. On the one hand, to perform the statistical analyzes that allow obtaining the response surface, the students use the Minitab software. On the other hand, students must verify the strength of the structure using the Cype structural calculation software. As a further result of the application of this methodology to obtain an optimal concrete wall, students are helped to acquire different transversal skills, such as design and project, critical thinking, analysis and problem solving or the use of specific instruments, all of them framed within the institutional project of the university. This paper is grouped in line with future research related to the use of structure optimization techniques by students applying different optimization techniques. Keywords:
