Abstract:
The studies which are internationally done in the field of chemistry show that the students have difficulty in learning the subject of "The Designation of Chemical Compounds" which is one of the important and basic subjects in the chemistry and also, which prepares a substructure for many further subjects. In this sense, it was aimed to determine the students' readiness on writing the chemical inorganic compounds in this research. The research was done with 47 students in total who receive their education at 1st grade in the department of Science Teaching in a state university in Blacksea Region in Turkey. The data was collected by an open-ended information test which was developed by the researchers and which includes 100 chemical inorganic compounds (with ionic and covalent bond). It was asked to write the formulation for 55 of the compounds in the information test, and the name for 45 of them. The readiness levels were categorized in 4 ways as "low" for 0-25 points, "medium" for 26-50 points, "well" for 51-75 points, "very well" for 76-100 points. According to the research's findings; the general average of the information test is X=14,55 and its standard deviation is s=10,27 for N=47 students. According to these results, the students' readiness levels on writing the chemical inorganic compounds were found as "low". According to the independent samplings t-test's results which was done in order to determine whether the occurrence of this low level differs in the case that the students were asked to write the name of compound and its formulation; it was seen that there wasn't a significant difference in the average of success points that they got by the case to ask the name or formulation of the compound which was written [t(98)=-,932; p=,353>,05]. According to the research's result, the low readiness levels of science students to write the chemical inorganic compounds can attributable to the following reasons that the students would have learnt the limited name of compounds during their primary and secondary education with the curriculum which was prepared in compliance with the volute, and it would arise from the implementations based on memorization which would have been used in the training. The memorization can pose an obstacle for the meaningful learning and permanence of the information, and it can cause that the students get bored and don't want to learn something. Thus, it is thought that the use of student-center method and techniques which will be done with the participation of students will increases the permanence of students in order that the subject on writing the chemical inorganic compounds can be taught in a better way.
