Abstract:
From early 1900 to nowadays, Geodesy and Photogrammetry Engineering (GPE) profession has been evaluating according to technological, social and educational developments in Turkey. We can examine the GPE discipline’s evaluation in three parts with respect to global conjuncture.
The first part of evaluation, the main idea of GPE was national expectation such as map of Turkey, regional studies etc. The global projects had not taken account yet. The point we have to focus is that all studies had been carried out is related to the person who is one of the GPE discipline. The GPE was named Topography as a department in civil engineering at early 1900 to 1950s in Turkey.
The second part, after the Second World War, global changing effected to GPE discipline like other discipline. Many disciplines were born during this period in order to answer expectation of science and technology. Simultaneously, in Turkey, the Surveying Engineering and the first private sector of it were born. It was understood that the surveying techniques like remote sensing, laser ranging were important components to produce data. In this context, the GPE education was started as individual discipline.
Last part, after technological revolution which is space based geodesy and computer science development, the GPE education was re-constructed as being interdisciplinary. New discipline was named with Geodesy and Photogrammetry Engineering at early 1980 in Turkey.
Nowadays, GPE has to be re-constructed cause of fallowing the global constrains. The new system must contain the GIS, geoscience and computer science beside of geodesy, cartography and surveying including photogrammetry, remote sensing, laser ranging and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). The new trend for GPE is Geomatics Engineering and the process for converting GPE to Geomatics has already been starting in Turkey.
We will present the recent situation of GPE in Turkey and inform about process of transformation to Geomatics.
