Abstract:
In conditions of the strengthening of the status of the English language in the modern world and the development of its world varieties, special significance are attained to the methodical tools and teaching techniques to the formation of mechanisms for recognizing and identifying one or another variant of the English language, providing readiness for effective interaction with both native speakers and non-native ones.

The present paper is devoted to the methodology framework of teaching the phonetic features of the varieties of the English language to the students-linguists as means of improving their foreign language communicative competence.

Moreover, this study also contains a brief analysis of the results of an audit experiment which was conducted with the students of Linguistics at the Kazan Federal University in 2016 to analyze their ability to identify the phonetic features of the Modern English.

The results of the research suggest that Russian students-linguists are quite well informed about the phonetic peculiarities of different varieties of the English language but it is a challenge for them with the perception of regional variants of the English language.

An integral part of a successful communication is a preliminary study of the phonetic peculiarities of the language of the interlocutor. Phonetic aspects are also subjected to cultural influences and representation. Hence, territorial peculiarities of pronunciation should be studied even in general terms for a proper understanding of one or another variant of the English language.
