Abstract:
Practice makes perfect. However, repeating the same thing over and over without reflections sometimes may do more harm than good. Previously, we showed that getting students to video-tape each other’s laboratory performance could increase their seriousness in doing their work as well as making them pay more attention to the details. What is more, the video records could also be used by the teacher to share with students more about the dos and don’ts. In this study, students were asked not only to shoot one another’s performance in using aseptic techniques to spread plate and have the video submitted for evaluation, instead, they were asked to make their own video an educational one. While editing the video, students had more chance to reflect on their own performance. Besides, these videos were uploaded to the Panopto Video platform, which allows all students taking the course to see each other’s work. Through watching, rating and commenting on others’ work, students were encouraged to engage in peer teaching and learning. Through these exercises, students were trained to do something seriously; we hope students would apply the same attitude when learning anything new. Apart from laboratory techniques, students’ IT skills as well as communication skills could also be improved.
