Abstract:
Ryerson University’s G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education developed a self -assessment and planning workshop for internationally educated individuals. This self-assessment and planning course is designed for internationally educated professionals (IEPs) looking for strategies that would make their job searches more effective. Through facilitated and self-directed activities, case scenarios, and experiential exercises, learning modules help with action-planning, defining professional goals, and increasing self-confidence. Major topics include researching jobs and identifying ways to be successful in a new work environment. Upon completion, learning modules come together as a portfolio displaying an individual’s credentials, knowledge, and capabilities.
In the summer of 2009 Sunnybrook Health Science Centre (SHSC) was approached to consider offering a version of this workshop, customized to reflect their unique culture of client centred interprofessional care, for internationally educated employees. To maximize access and in consideration of adult learning preferences the workshop was delivered utilizing a combination of face to face and on-line sessions. .
The workshop was advertised to nurses and a pilot was offered in Fall 2009. Response to the workshop was overwhelmingly positive. Participants expressed confidence to identify and articulate transferable skills, develop goal statements and utilize various career and education planning tools. Evidence of organizational systemic change was apparent in an increased awareness of career challenges faced by internationally educated staff.
As a result the PLACED was asked by SHCS to offer this workshop to a broader audience in Spring 2010. Keywords:
