MULTIDISCIPLINARY LABORATORY PROGRAM FOR BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING COURSE

Nowadays higher education often requires creation of interdisciplinary groups to lift the border between disciplines. Thus, future scientists and specialists are taught to know an engineer area with positive effect. The sample of this trend is biomedical engineering course, in which among others there are such areas as: electronics, IT technologies and medical science.

In this paper, the multidisciplinary laboratory classes as also as results of chosen student’s activities were presented. In the article, new laboratory intended for biomedical engineering course, to learn basic skills needed in computer aided medical monitoring was described. For this course, the practical laboratory activities are dedicated. Students have to do the tasks according to prepared instructions. Tasks involve students in group working, which prepare them to teamwork in future and also, allows to solve problem in the complete way. Students are able to get knowledge about AVR microcontroller and how to use it with sensors. Developed studies curricula are set on practical use of the computer science, electrical engineering and basic knowledge of medicine science. To do this independently there is the need to spend a lot of time to study datasheets of each device. However, teamwork allows to separate tasks and learn many things at the same time under the supervision of experienced teacher. Projects performed by students solve the given to them tasks and are all related with computer aided medical monitoring. The examples of these tasks are: computer acquisition of temperature from many points of patient body or optical sensing of patient pulse. In all cases signal collecting and processing is need.

Laboratory of computer aided medical monitoring is a modern laboratory dedicated to research and development of new branch in engineering curricula. Main aim of this course is to make a connection between different disciplines like programming, practical use of electronics and biomedical engineering. Laboratory is equipped in Arduino Uno research kit with Arduino IDE for software development, as also as sensors which are used to create student’s projects.
