Abstract:
Schools, universities and general educational institutes are situated in buildings which can contain an extensible number of rooms. They can be categorized into common lecture rooms, smaller seminar offices, large computer rooms, but also specific laboratory areas and some research labs. Additionally, the buildings can be monolithic, campus styled or even distributed with several houses in different cities. The inventory of some of the rooms may contain expensive and high sensible devices, so the access to this facilities must be restricted to those persons who are instructed to this devices and have the rights to enter this areas.

In contrast to the groups of rooms there is the group of persons like student or pupils, employees and external servicing companies of the educational building. These groups can be not only very big, they also underlie permanently a regular or random fluctuation. This leads to a high demand of administration work for holding all the access rights on a current version.

The aim of this work shows the necessary steps for facility manager and infrastructure officer of schools or universities to decide, plan and integrate a RFID (radio frequency identification) based and centralized door access systems which stand the requirements to operate in the sensible environment of educational buildings.

With the help of the daily exports provided by the usually already available databases of all involved persons the administration can be easy and be possible without additional employees. Only the exceptions which differ from commercial industry based access systems must be taken into account. A number of exceptions and their remedies are shown in this paper.

Electronic door access systems belong to an important facility of big buildings or distributed building complexes. An optimized system can increase the modernity of the education institutes and gives a well-adjusted balance between physical security, administration complexity and user convenience. It also can rise the quality and acceptance of the offered teaching, training and common learning environment.
