Abstract:
This poster presentation has as its focus unaccredited skills programmes at a community learning centre in Pretoria, South Africa. We made use of the nominal group technique (NGT) as data collection instrument to enable us to identify initial aspects that obstruct the accreditation of skills programmes. To enhance the reliability of the research, the researchers decided to involve as the sample, participants who are a group of lecturers who are involved with the managing and teaching of skills programmes at the Centre on a daily basis. Aspects identified during the NGT meeting, formed the basis of an action research project. Data were collected during a one-hour session. During consecutive steps of the NGT that lasted for two hours, hindrances to accreditation were identified. The steps taken as well as the outcomes of the meeting will be illustrated during the poster presentation. The meeting succeeded in establishing the foundation for an action research project by identifying the following issues that obstruct the accreditation of skills programmes: quality management, learning and teaching, the marketing strategy, work integrated learning and the placement of alumni in different jobs.
