ACADEMIC EDUCATION OF IT STUDENTS IN THE FIELD OF DATA ANALYTICS FOR THE NEEDS OF THE CONTEMPORARY BUSINESS

The dominance of information technology and related to it the digitization and computerization of almost all business processes have resulted in the emergence of a new trend in enterprise management that is expressed by active utilization of data. This new approach is called data driven management. Skilful acquisition and utilization of data allow enterprises to create the innovative solutions and to increase efficiency and effectiveness of processes. Today many of them perform data analysis in different areas and thanks to that achieved many successes. The potential hidden in the widespread utilization of business analytics allows companies to improve their own competitiveness.

Effective data utilization in management requires the employment the staff with appropriate analytical knowledge and skills. The analysis of offers on different job websites points out that there is a huge demand for specialists in data analytics area. However, nowadays the universities educate IT students that will be employed in most cases on different job positions related to software development. To meet the needs of the companies, it is necessary to modify the existing curricula.

The paper presents the results of the survey, which aim was the evaluation of the level of analytical competencies possessed by IT students of universities located in Eastern Poland. The analysis of their knowledge and skills related to data analytics constitutes a key content of this paper. The obtained results indicate a low level of this type of competencies and the need to adapt the curricula to the requirements of the contemporary enterprises.
