Abstract:
The University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien offers 11 bachelor degree programs and 15 master degree programs. Students, mainly at the level of master degree programs, can choose between full-time and part-time studies. Part-time lectures are usually taught with Blended Learning methods. Therefore, at the Technikum Wien a Web based Learning Management System called Campus Information System (CIS) is provided. The CIS offers simple download of learning materials as well as communication tools and some Computer Supported Collaborative Learning techniques. But as a strategic decision the Technikum Wien plans to offer some pure distance learning course programs in the near future. For this purpose, on the one hand the Blended Learning platform must be expanded to support pure E-Learning. But on the other hand the major challenge is to redesign existing or develop new lectures to become E-Learning lectures.
The proposed paper describes the current technical possibilities for supporting distance learning at the Technikum Wien. Within these possibilities, it also shows some best practices in teaching part-time students at the Technikum Wien. Among the most important are:
• Use learning materials for self studies of theoretical background
• Use attendance time for practical application
• Use attendance time for discussion
• Use a variety of teaching methods
• Ensure communication between students themselves and between students and lecturers
• Try to enforce Social Networking
The authors have developed some ideas in designing lectures for distance learning especially in the area of ICT courses. Experiences made so far will be described in detail.
