Abstract:
Pandemics, hurricanes, civil unrest, and wars disrupt all aspects of life. Education is not spared, and often is affected the most. This paper explores various themes that emerged in recent years in response to learning and teaching during crisis, particularly during armed conflicts. This work started on the request of the Ukrainian staff of the Academic Integrity and Quality Initiative (Academic IQ) with the American Councils for International Education. Ukrainian educators were just about to start a school year in September 2022 and were desperate for resources. Thus, for this paper we focus on selected areas/resources that were requested the most: learning and teaching during crisis, academic resilience, support mechanism for well-being (e.g., mental health) of educators, students, and their parents/guardians, and activities for preventing (or recovering from) learning loss. We will also introduce international organizations that place their efforts assisting countries during armed conflicts. Participants will benefit from a comprehensive overview and list of online resources (i.e., https://www.diigo.com/outliner/m0shdp/Education-in-Crisis?key=z7s94eyfu1). Though approaches to dealing with education during crisis are definitely context-specific, many topics covered in this paper will be applicable to various emergency contexts both for K-12 and higher education. The systematized collection of resources can be used for creating toolkits and drafting frameworks.
