Abstract:
Since the beginning of the digital revolution, technology has become a progressively more integral part of our society, and consequently education. Increased use of technology, online education, blended teaching techniques – are common trends in higher education, and in general, are relevant and positive developments, as we attempt to keep up with technological advancements.

As we continue to transition into an increasingly digital world, and the generational shift to technological dependence becomes more prevalent, the landscape of certain disciplines begins to change. In cases of artistic disciplines, such as music and design, the overlap of digital and physical skills hold the potential to increased quality and productivity. However, substituting essential physical skills – such as sketching in design ideation – typically results in a more shallow critical potential. Similarly, in music, relying on recording, as opposed to physical performance and evaluation – removes the most important aspect of music – the human aspect.

This presentation will explore the challenges and opportunities that are presented by digital media in artistic disciplines, specifically, music and design education.
