Abstract:
This paper aims to explore the development of teaching-learning methods in virtual space through computer simulations and prototyping in engineering education. The use of 3D technologies in the education process is crucial in today times. Virtual learning changes the rules of genuine interaction between students and teachers. Innovative teaching techniques must be applied using technology to attract and engage students in the virtual prototyping process.

The methodology demonstrated in this paper involves using technology in education by implementing virtual prototyping and simulation tools. 3D computer simulation is based on 3D modelling, allowing students to recreate a virtual prototype using modelling software, online application, and finite element evaluation.

Therefore, the methodology includes the preparatory and primary steps required to perform the virtual modelling and simulation. In the first stage, the 3D modelling of the footwear product is made using Mind CAD 3D. Then, a simulation of virtual, true-to-life footwear visualisation and the foot's positioning according to normal gait phases using CLO is performed. The generated 3D model is imported in finite element analysis-based software (ANSYS), where a suitable loading pattern is applied considering the gait biomechanics.

In the end, the learner can evaluate simulations quickly, considering real-life scenarios with the designed footwear product. The normal stress distribution and deformation behaviour are observed without producing a physical prototype, which reduces time, creation costs, and material resources. Prototyping and virtual simulation provide the student with a hands-on, constructivist approach to learning. Virtual learning should be methodological to give the students the necessary knowledge from the curriculum and the proper tools to meet their learning objectives. The application of virtual prototyping and simulation in engineering education encourages critical thinking, automates assessment processes and combines online guidance.
