Abstract:
This paper explains our first year progress in the implementation of an Educational Innovation Project for the Basic Statistics courses offered as part of the Bachelor´s Degree in Civil Engineering and the Bachelor´s Degree in Public Works Engineering.

In the project, a teaching methodology based on continuous assessment was adopted in the classroom practical sessions and computer laboratory sessions. Our proposed methodology was aimed to the formative and continuous assessment of the students and the promotion of the independent learning.

New teaching materials were specially developed to promote the independent learning of the students in the classroom practical sessions, computer laboratory sessions and the introduction to the statistical concepts of the units of theory. All these material have been collected and published in three books.

To conclude, the quality of the new materials has been evaluated based on the results of a student survey. The high academic results and the student’s positive opinions about these materials permit us to be optimistic about our progress in the implementation of the educational innovation.
