Abstract:
Biotechnology is a discipline where autonomous learning can be easily implemented. The speed at which strategies and technologies are developed makes mandatory learning methods more focused in “how to learn” than in “what to learn”. The objective of this study is to evaluate the student’s level of satisfaction regarding the learning strategies implemented in the subject “Genomics” of the Biotechnology Degree at the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (UPV). Among the methodologies in use, we focus here in a project-based learning activity, where the students design and develop a research proposal aimed to solve a given biotechnological question. Competences as creativity, decision-making, teamwork, searching of relevant information, as well as writing and speech skills are trained and develop using genomics learning as a guiding element. Survey results indicate a very high percentage of satisfaction when this methodology is applied, as compared with more classic learning methodologies.
