Abstract:
The Antwerp Maritime Academy (AMA) offers nowadays 2 Nautical Education programs namely in Nautical Sciences and Maritime Engineering. At AMA an entirety of clearly structured bachelor and master programmes is offered to students from all positions in society and from all generations. Whereas other HEI’s are only bound by legal stipulations on a regional level, programmes at AMA moreover need to meet international rules and quality standards of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). AMA issues certificates that are in accordance with the IMO STCW 95-norm (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers).
The Manila 2010 amendments to the STCW Convention and Code were adopted on 25 june 2010 marking a major revision of the STCW Convention and Code. The 2010 amendments are set to enter info force on 1 January 2012 are aimed at bringing the Convention and Code up to date and to enable them to address issues that are anticipated to emerge in the foreseeable future. Amongst the amendments adopted, there are a number of important changes to each chapter of the Convention and Code, including new requirements for marine environment awareness training and training in leadership and teamwork.
The 2010 amendments are now implemented into the educational programs of the AMA. During their study the students deal with different teamwork-related issues as, leadership, team capabilities, common purpose, team norms, communication, conflicts, team operating procedures, member integration. These activities are distributed across the curricula, considering a long-term deployment.
More specific the competence leadership will be achieved by the following objectives in the program:

• Recognize the importance of soft skills
• Enhance inter-personal relationship both onboard and ashore
• Promote good safety culture onboard
• Motivate people to perform effectively, safely and excel in their work and duties
• To be able to communicate vision and strategies to the crew on behalf of the management

This paper briefly discusses the implementation process of the 2010 amendments and also specific about the implementation of the competence leadership into the education programs. Also the assessment of the competence leadership will be briefly discussed.
