Abstract:

Road safety culture is the set of knowledge, values, attitudes, and behaviors that everyone should be aware of when using public roads, regardless of how they travel, whether as a pedestrian, cyclist, passenger, or driver. That is why it is important to implement road safety programs in schools, as they are extremely important in helping to shape more responsible, aware, and respectful citizens from an early age.

These programs help prevent traffic accidents that occur due to ignorance of the rules, distractions, or irresponsible behavior. When students receive road safety education, they learn to recognize traffic signs, cross streets correctly, respect traffic lights, and understand the importance of behaving as responsible citizens on public roads, which significantly reduces the risk of suffering or causing accidents. Likewise, people understand that everyone has rights and responsibilities within the mobility system.

The objective is to promote road safety culture among elementary school students through educational programs that foster knowledge of traffic rules and responsible behavior on public roads, with the aim of reducing accidents and strengthening safe mobility.

The methodology used to carry out this program involved designing surveys for students, teachers, and parents, as well as observing their behavior when entering or leaving school, identifying the main problems related to road safety culture. Once the problems had been identified, a road safety education program was designed, consisting of workshops and talks in elementary schools on topics such as pedestrian safety, traffic signs, bicycle use, and respecting traffic lights, as well as circuit simulations and awareness campaigns carried out by urban mobility engineering students.

As a result, this approach led to changes in students' knowledge and behavior, contributing to the formation of more responsible and aware citizens regarding road safety, as they not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also develop values such as responsibility, respect, and empathy for each road user, thus building a more aware society for the safety of all.
