Abstract:
Urban mobility is a right that directly affects people's quality of life. In a context such as the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), one of the universities with the largest student population in Mexico City (CDMX), where thousands of students, teachers, and administrative staff move around every day, complex travel patterns are generated that require innovative tools for proper planning and the need to switch to a more sustainable transportation model.

Currently, the mobility infrastructure inside and outside the IPN campus faces problems such as saturation and congestion at access points, unequal distribution of equipment, and limited coverage of sustainable alternatives such as bicycles. Given this context, it is essential to incorporate geospatial methodologies that allow for objective analysis of the coverage and territorial reach of the existing infrastructure.

Voronoi diagrams are a mathematical and spatial tool capable of dividing the territory into areas of influence based on strategic nodes, such as access points, bus stops, or micro-mobility stations. Their application in infrastructure planning allows for the identification of areas of opportunity and the optimization of the location of new points.
The purpose of this project is to analyze the importance of Voronoi diagrams in infrastructure planning for more sustainable mobility for the IPN community, demonstrating that their implementation can contribute to more efficient, data-driven decision-making aimed at building a more accessible, functional, and environmentally responsible university environment.

The methodology used to carry out this work was divided into three phases: the first phase of the project was to identify the main problems faced by bicycle users within the Zacatenco campus and its surroundings; the second phase was to delimit the study area in order to work with clear data; and the final phase was to construct the model (generating Voronoi diagrams) based on main access points, transport stops, and non-existent cycling infrastructure.

As a result, we obtained the areas of mobility influence in the vicinity of the IPN's Zacatenco campus, which has great potential for strategic nodes. Based on this information, we identified the optimal points where there is an opportunity to implement cycling infrastructure or micro-mobility points to improve connectivity and facilitate sustainable travel on campus.
