Abstract:
In the 1990s, after the so-called. the Slovak Revolution there was a need to protect private property, which until then only protected the state security components. In the area of commercial security, there are currently more employees working in Slovakia than in the Police Force, up to 25,000. Ensuring higher education of workers in the area of protection of persons and property is essential for the protection of society from negative anti-social phenomena, against various types of crime, before organized crime as well as terrorism. The current security situation in the Slovak Republic and in the world requires highly educated professionals who will be ready and able to effectively manage systems in the fight against offenders who use state-of-the-art technology, especially in the fight against organized crime or terrorism. Higher education in commercial security has a history of approximately 20 years in Slovakia. University of Žilina, Faculty of Security Engineering has accredited education in all three stages of study in the field of security since 2005 in a separate branch of Security Management. The first curriculum was drafted in 2001 under the specialization of Civil Security without a clear intention. The aim was to prepare higher education specialists in the field of private security - security managers, but without the involvement of security managers in curriculum development. The fundamental curriculum modification was made in 2008 when Faculty of Security engineering, University of Zilina lecturers began to work intensively with universities abroad, with practice and interest associations at home and abroad. In 2013, technical and managerial subjects of study were significantly expanded. It was only in 2017 that the Faculty of Security engineering, University of Zilina's curricula were compared with the results of a survey focusing on competence needs among security managers in Slovakia.

The article contains description, analysis and comparison of skills needed for work of security managers. The skills survey was carried out in an anonymous questionnaire form among the security managers of the largest companies in the Slovak Republic. After evaluating the questionnaires, the order of skills was determined and then sorted by brainstorming of security managers at the workshop. The results were also consulted with students who completed practical internships abroad. Based on this article, the new structure of the Security Management study program (with list of all subjects) will be updated according to current trends and needs. The continuity of the subjects will be shown in the diagram. The importance of subjects containing the necessary skills will be shown in the tables.
