Abstract:
This paper provides a framework for the planning and implementation stages involved in developing curriculum content programs based on IEEE Standards, and perhaps codes and standards from other organizations as well; and how this content adds value to undergraduate, graduate, and continuing educational programs. This paper will include detailed information regarding the standards development processes, how to read standards, and how value-added content can boost the career development of those in many engineering and technical fields. It is important to highlight that standards and the content in this paper could be useful to STEM and other innovation fields such as patents, intellectual property, legal, and more. Therefore, not only engineers, but other professionals could benefit from this proposal.

Technical codes and standards are not currently part of most educational curricula, and this valuable knowledge and skills can take industry leaders multiple years to develop in new hires or entry-level employees. Therefore, our intent is to highlight the relevance of codes and standards in the skill set development process that could positively impact the career of those in the engineering and other technical fields.

Generally speaking, for entry level technical personnel, the initial lack of expertise and/or knowledge in standards could cost them anywhere from 2 to 4 years of supervised experience to gain enough insights on technical codes and standards to make their own path in engineering and technical fields. This amount of time and effort will also impact employers and self-driven entrepreneurs that would like to pursue innovation and technology for the future.
