Abstract:
The current trends in higher education, the Bologna Process, the internationalization of Universities and the consequent increased competition in the Higher Education Arena make it more and more necessary for the Higher education Institutions to perform more efficiently on different levels and be accountable for the goals they are pursuing. Ever more rankings are being constantly published and the ranking business in Higher Education is more and more often debated, questionned criticized, but it's clear that it has become a tool we all will have to deal with.

For this reason, benchmarking exercises and self-assessment practices on the different aspects of the university management are more and more necessary in order to achieve transparency and be visible on the market. Individual actors risk being too weak if acting alone in this new environment and long term strategic alliances are becoming more and more often the answer to the new challenges.

The Cluster network is a consortium of 12 European Universities of science and technology and 6 associated non European members working together since 1990 on the different aspects of education, research and innovation. A specific Cluster Task Force on University Management has recently worked on an internal benchmarking and assessment project that can represent a case study and provide good practice examples on the same issue to any university or network willing to improve its visibility and performance levels. The session will also give the opportunity for an open discussion on the assessment of university management in general.
