TOOLS FOR ACTIVATING TRANSLATION LITERACY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOM

Abstract:
Today it’s urgent to talk about the pedagogical importance of training students to develop skills of evaluation, analysis, decoding the information.

Translation literacy is a field that relies on cultural, scientific, political and others peer-to-peer communication literacy.

Scientific translation literacy is used to describe accurate and adequate evaluations of the scientific facts and phenomena and further translation in target language.

To translate from source language to target language it is necessary to have a good command of knowledge of both languages but sometimes not sufficient to express the sense of the text in another language.

Teaching translating literacy involves: uses authentic materials that appeal to students’ interests; creation of positive and friendly environment; inspiration to create meaningful translations; evaluation of their analytical skills; development of linguistic intuition, etc.
To get the sufficient level of translation literacy, the teacher can use tools that activates students cognitive and academic strategies.

Some of them are Haiku Translation; 3-2-1 or 2-1 Translation Exercise; Running Translation; Back Translation; Chemical Riddles and Translation Madness.

Tools for activating help students interact more, evaluate the scientific information. Moreover, most of students emphasize the usefulness of translation literacy in the future research work.
