Abstract:
Background: Positive behavior support is a method which prevents and suppresses problem behaviors by focusing on the function of the behaviors. The studies on positive behavior support focus on creating changes in behavior or behaviors by identifying environmental factors and making amendments in environmental factors.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of Positive Behaviors Support (PBS) plan that was designed after interviews with teachers and Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) on the behavior of obeying classroom rules.
Programme description: In the current study experts and the teacher planned the study cooperatively and the teacher implemented the plan in the classroom. A positive behavior support package which is created with regard to Functional Behavior Assessment, direct observations and teacher interview is used for target behaviors. The PBS package consisted of prevention strategies, classroom rules, routines and reinforcement.
Sample: The study was conducted in a public school with 3rd grade students. There were 32 students in the classroom and one of them was diagnosed with intellectual disability. PBS was implemented in all classes but the data were collected from one male and one female student who were defined after FBA by consulting the teacher.
Design and methods: Single subject ABAB design was used to examine the effects of PBS intervention.
Results: The result shows that PBS package, which is enriched by FBA, is effective on increasing students’ behavior of obeying classroom rules. Teacher and family opinions support these findings, too. Inter-observer reliability and treatment fidelity of the study are deemed sufficient.
Conclusion: Positive Behaviors Support strategies can be used in classrooms on problem behaviors. In this study, teacher played an effective role and implemented strategies and packages in his classroom. In new studies teachers can play more important roles and Positive Behavior Supports effects can be evaluated on new problem behaviors.
