Abstract:
The paper is aimed at the presentation of teaching subtitling in the university education of future translators during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the theoretical part, authors focus on the definition of the EMT (European Master’s in Translation) competence framework (consisting of language and culture, translation, technology, personal and interpersonal and service provision competence) and the competencies of audiovisual translators, which are necessary for students’ successful integration into the current translation market. The authors also focus on the definition of subtitling including the basic spatial and temporal constraints of subtitles, drawing on the works of J. Díaz-Cintas - A. Remael (2007, 2014), E. Perez (2018) and M. Pošta (2014). The authors describe and analyse the process of distance learning with an emphasis on subtitling specific audiovisual products from German and French into Slovak using the subtitling softwares Subtitle Worskhop and AegiSub, while focusing on technical, temporal, spatial and linguistic specifics of subtitles as well as specific challenges associated with the transition of teaching subtitling to distance learning.
