Abstract:
Problem statement:
The organization of an independent study of defectology students in high school on the basis of a competence-based approach gives an opportunity to promote a student`s personal advancement of career paths and the fostering of professionally significant qualities: intelligence, responsibility, creativity, communication, information culture, and self-education.

Purpose of the study:
1. To determine the motivational-value attitude of students to independent work through the development of their internal, external and procedural motivation.
2. To study the status of professionally significant qualities of students-defectologists: intelligence, responsibility, creativity, communication, information culture, ability to self-education.

Methods:
Methods of empirical research are: observation, pedagogical experiment, comparison, description, diagnostics (questioning, interviewing, testing, survey, etc.); and statistical treatment of pedagogical experiment data.

Results of the study:
The pedagogical conditions for the organization of defectology students` independent study on the basis of a competence-based approach ensure the effectiveness of future specialists` professional training adhering to a set of pedagogical conditions: ensuring students` motivational-value attitude in relation to an independent study thanks to developing their internal, external and procedural motivation; training courses projection as a system of professionally oriented objectives, an attainment of which allows to provide a sustainable transition from the student’s training activities to the professional activities of a future specialist; methodological equipment for students` training activities self-organization taking full advantage of ICT potentials; ensuring a control over students` independent study based on monitoring of the process of a future specialist`s professional realization.
