Abstract:
Problem statement:
Higher education is the basis for the professional self-esteem. Therefore, the success and positive evolution of the whole society in general depends on the quality of the higher education offerings. An important indicator of education achievement is the independence of students. It is necessary for a student to make independent judgments and actions while overcoming the difficulties in learning.

Purpose of the study:
1. reveal the essence, structure and content of an independent study of the students of the speciality of Defectology in the context of a competence-based approach
2. identify pedagogical conditions for the organization of defectology students` independent study in the context of a competence-oriented approach.

Methods:
An analysis of the literature on the professional training problems, the implementation of a competence-based approach in students' education, the initial methodological positions were formed, which determined the general approaches to solving the problem of a competence-based approach implementing to the organization of defectology students` independent study. The methodology of T.I. Ilyina was used for determining the initial data on the level of motivation development of students` training activity, the methodology of T.D. Dubovitskaya was used for identifying its orientation, the test of N.I. Shevandrina “Assessment of cognitive skills in studing” was used for identifying the degree of intensity of students` cognitive skills.

Results of the study:
A set of pedagogical conditions has been developed that ensures the effective organization of independent activities of students at a university in the context of a competency-based approach.

Conclusions:
The results of the experimental work demonstrate the effectiveness of using a well-designed integrated program for an independent study in the process of defectology students` project in the context of a competence-based approach and demonstrate its positive impact on the level of their professional competence.
