Abstract:
Lesson study, also known as lesson research, has been used in Japan for more than one hundred years. It involves a group of teachers working collaboratively to prepare a single lesson in detail. It has been widely implemented in Japan at the primary school level, and is now gradually being adapted for other levels of education to improve teaching quality.

How to increase vocational school students’ levels of interest in learning has long been a challenging task for many teachers and educational authorities. Co-funded by the APEC lesson study group and Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, this study serves as an empirical research to find out whether lesson study can be implemented for vocational school students to improve their levels of interest in learning and encourage their participation in the learning process. 276 students from six classes in a private vocational school participated in this lesson research. After carefully planning a lesson collaboratively with a group of other experienced teachers and superintendents, an English teacher was filmed teaching the lesson. Post-lesson reflections from the teacher, discussions with the expert group and interviews of the school faculty will be used to cross-examine and record the learning process and outcomes of the lesson study.
