MASTERYPATHS - A PATHWAY TO ADAPTIVE LEARNING FOR THE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT

Research has shown that adaptive learning experiences in instruction enhances the overall student experience and may promote better knowledge retention and academic performance. However, the concept of adaptive learning may prove to be difficult to implement in a virtual environment, thus limiting its application in online instruction. A US-based software company, which develops the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), has taken a step towards branching the divide between an online course and adaptive learning through the development of a new tool called Mastery Paths.

Mastery Paths is a tool that instructors can use in coordination with the Canvas LMS to automate adaptive learning, by methodically providing additional course content, including resources and assignments, to individual students based on their performance on specific course activities. These innovative pathways may prove to be beneficial to both the student and the instructor. For the instructor, it provides a systematic way to deliver additional resources and activities to students at the same time that it encourages mastery or remediation of a specific learning task based on individual performance. For students, it provides the opportunity to experience and interact with content that is customized to suit their current learning proficiencies.

This poster will provide a detailed look at how Mastery Paths can be used in an online environment and provide an example of its implementation in an actual higher education online course.
