Abstract:
In an era increasingly defined by catastrophic environmental changes such as global climate shifts, biodiversity depletion, pandemics, and unsustainable consumption rates, the imperative for educational strategies fostering a deep-rooted sustainability ethos has never been more pronounced. This comprehensive article undertakes an exploration of the quintessential role that education must play in nurturing an intrinsic connection between individuals and nature—a fundamental step toward mitigating adverse impacts on both our quality of life and the health of our ecosystems. Delving into the 'Connection to Nature' (C2N) concept, we examine it as a crucial leverage point for catalyzing transformative sustainability actions, while also dissecting the dichotomous human behaviors that either foster or fracture this vital bond.

We critically assess the prevailing institutional frameworks within educational systems that, due to an intensified focus on academic metrics and diminished emphasis on outdoor engagement, may inadvertently estrange students from the natural environment. Such a disconnection not only undermines individual well-being but also erodes the societal foundation essential for collective resilience and sustainable progress. The article argues for a reimagined educational paradigm that actively incorporates nature-based experiences, thereby nurturing an awareness and appreciation of the profound interdependencies between human and ecological health.

Further, this article extends the discourse to the realm of environmental stewardship within protected areas, highlighting the multifaceted significance—ecological, social, cultural, and spiritual—of natural and cultural resources. Through the lens of various case studies and theoretical models, we underscore the imperative for community engagement, specialized knowledge, and cooperative endeavors in safeguarding these invaluable assets.

In positing a multidimensional approach to reignite human-nature relationships, we champion educational reforms that transcend traditional learning environments to foster a holistic and enduring connection to the natural world. By outlining pathways toward new educational frameworks, this article illuminates the critical benefits of the human-nature relationship, not only for individual fulfillment but also for societal well-being. We advocate for integrated strategies that align educational objectives with sustainability principles, thereby steering both individuals and communities towards a more sustainable, equitable, and interconnected future. This scholarly inquiry represents a significant stride towards developing strategic methodologies that empower practitioners and educational institutions to effectively respond to the multifaceted challenges and opportunities presented by the interaction between humans and nature, ensuring a symbiotic coexistence within planetary boundaries for generations to come.
