PHYSICAL ASSISTANCE IN TOURIST ITINERARIES AS A PEDAGOGICAL INNOVATION MODEL FOR EDUCATION IN THE TEACHING - LEARNING PROCESS

The activity proposed as a model of intervention to improve the motivation for student learning is their participation in an activity called PHYSIOTHERAPY TRAINING AND ASSISTANCE IN THE ROAD OF SANTIAGO.

Objectives
The purpose of the following work primarily pursues the aim of spreading eminently practical, while at the same time original activity, which we believe encourages in students a greater interest in the teaching – learning process of the theoretical - practical matter taught at university level, within of the subject Physiotherapy in sport. It is also intended to assess whether the assistance to such events is an appropriate teaching strategy for students.

Materials and methods
Students in their third year of the Diploma in Physiotherapy carried out the activity in the town of Órbigo Hospital, in the province of Leon.
Prior to the commencement of the activity, students were given two seminars of three hours duration each, a summary sheet of the important aspects and had their functions explained for the proper functioning of the activity. They were also provided with a registration sheet of pilgrims with information such as age, sex, kilometers per stage and in total pathology that caused the visit to the physiotherapist, treatment performed and estimated time per pilgrim.
The activity was carried out by 31 students of the Diploma in Physiotherapy who served for 51 working days, from Monday to Sunday from 1 July to 31 August, with a rotation of approximately two students every three days.
A total of 352 pilgrims were treated, of which 209 were men and 143 women. Once the activity was over, a survey was given to the participating students to find out the overall assessment of the activity and the degree of involvement in the process of learning the theoretical material - practical matther taught on the course.

Conclusions
All the pupils think that this kind of experience gives them significant benefits. Some of the advantages offered by the activity are as follows: it is an experience that allows them to deal with real patients, the possibility of seeing recent pathologies and be able to treat them inmediately, the application of knowledge acquired at University and the personal satisfaction of carrying out a treatment with complete independence and autonomy in an unconventional practice area. Other benefits include entertainment and tourism, coexistence personal relationships with pilgrims on the road to Santiago, personal experience and satisfaction by being useful to people and helping others.
