Abstract:
The higher education sector is abuzz with the recent ramifications of accessible AI. Government bodies, education leaders and academics are concerned with the impacts of AI on teaching and learning environments. Press coverage, social media and academic literature are fully engaged with the perspectives of these stakeholders. The student voice, however, is more muted. To redress this issue, focus groups and a survey were undertaken with students at the University of Bristol. Student perspectives on the impact of AI on their learning and teaching experiences were investigated. The results clarify areas where students feel positively or negatively towards AI in their education, and which areas the University holds responsibility for. The research articulates known AI educational issues in comparison to issues identified by students. Several observations uncover unexpected attitudes and problems experienced by students in relation to AI. Key results from thematic analysis of the data will be presented alongside lessons for the sector including communication, guidance, reflections on academic honesty, and curriculum change.
