Abstract:
Creating engagement in the big lecture rooms is always a challenge. We have developed a tool, initially designed to create involvement and engagement in language learning, but that has great potential to engage students in development of a common social learning environment. The software, a response system designed to interact with text response has been applied to create connection between one lecturer and a group of students in order to build self-regulated students. The software has been used as a tool to create engagement and to connect students in engineering education to the topics of learning, personal development, and self-efficacy in engineering students. The tool provides possibility to ask open text based questions. This tool has proven efficient to ask private questions about learning and learnings styles, strategies and ways to think. The phrase repeated by the students, “I am not alone” shows how this tool can be used to interact with a group. The wordcould, as a way to give feedback on a text response is social by nature as the repeated words are shown as big words and hence gets important.
