USING PROVERBS AND ADAGES IN TEACHING GREEK AS A SECOND OR FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Abstract:
The purpose of the research is to analyse the blurred line between language and culture, to identify their importance in language teaching, to determine teachers' beliefs on cultural education and, to pinpoint their approach in using proverbs and adages. To accomplish these goals, the following tasks were set: to specify the particular reason why proverbs and adages can be a tool in language teaching; to identify their purpose; to conduct a detailed practical analysis. The outlined tasks required the use of the following methods. Scientific and methodological literature was analysed, information sources were scrutinized. A quantitative research strategy was selected to achieve the research objective. Data were accumulated through a questionnaire survey. The survey was conducted remotely in September and October 2021.

Language courses are of special importance to language specialists and learners due to the exchange of cultural characteristics. Thus, both parties have the opportunity to acknowledge the limits of their own background and their differences. At the same time, they learn how beneficial the process of creative exchange and interaction of cultural elements can be.

The survey results obtained allow us to draw a conclusion about the teachers’ attitude and viewpoint in the matter of proverbs and adages in teaching Greek as a second or foreign language.
