Abstract:
This presentation focuses on the learning of Estonian on a computer-based tandem course and how using the technological tools in the Web-based language learning enhance the motivation of learners. The choice of topic was influenced by the ‘Estonian conversation course’ launched at the University of Tartu in 2021, when the spread of the pandemic and the growing need to offer language learners direct communication experience made it necessary to switch to online learning.

Language learners from a variety of countries were enrolled on the course. They interacted with students whose mother tongue is Estonian. The course activities are structured around communication via social media and video conferencing and are designed to give learners the opportunity to develop the necessary skills for online oral communication.

The presentation addresses the challenges faced by the students on the course and explores the advantages and disadvantages of Internet-based language learning based on contemporary research and feedback from learners. The survey provides insight into the reasons that make online language learning motivating for learners.

A questionnaire was used to canvass the participants’ opinions regarding the most difficult aspects of computer-assisted learning and of the Estonian language.
