Abstract:
The paper presents the results of the research aimed at teaching neologisms in the English language to international affairs university students through reading online media resources.

The subject matter is a training model for identifying the meaning of new recently coined English words in the media discourse and inferring conclusions of how to use them in a proper context.

The objective of the research is to propose the techniques to identify specific features of media discourse and show the role of the new coined words that influence the comprehension of the media text.

The methods applied are analysis and classification of neologisms used in the media discourse, theoretical modelling, sampling, content analysis, and categorisation.

The sample included international affairs university students of the 1st year who were given media discourse contexts that contained neologisms followed by exercises.

The findings of this research have shown that identifying new coined words broadens the horizons of the international affairs students and allows developing cultural competence and awareness in the international affairs students.

The paper analyses and interprets the results received that can be used in teaching a wide array of subjects where media competence and self-guided learning are placed value on.
