Abstract:
Rocky landscape, capricious climate with lot of precipitations, atmospheric discharges, as well as the presence of many surface waters or the presence of excavations from constructions, often done without any criteria in both cities especially in the recent years, have led to an increase in the presence of α radiation, originating from Rn or its daughters 214Pb & 214Bi.
The waters of Shkodra’s Lake of and Vlora Bay, are with slow circulation. In these coasts are located the cities involved in the study .
The content in dust and humidity often exceeds the permitted standards in both regions.
High Rn absorption caused by atmospheric dust PM2.5, PM 1, PM 0.1, and the increasing presence of these dusts in our cities, is one of the reasons of growing cancer diseases in the respiratory apparatus.
Departments of physics of Shkodra and Vlora University took over not only to monitor the content of dust and Rn but to emphasize the students' opinion.
For more than two years students have been involved with programmed measurements of radon, in public areas of both cities.
For the evaluation of the radon content, both methods were used; the active one using the device RadStar RS300 and the passive , with detectors prepared in licensed centers.
For the evaluation of radon during winter period, through the detectors , direct involvment of students, prooved to be useful not only for didactic and scientific purpose , but also for increasing the number of them interested in pollution problems and radioactive contamination.
Consequently students have been made more conscious about environmental problems, and often, have provided rational thoughts in collecting and monitoring the data, in different locations and time.
The presantation of measurements results and discussion with the specialists of medicine, have increased the interest in improving the environment pollutiontion.
The study also has assisted in the construction of the map of Rn and recommendations were given on the use of surface water for agriculture and daily consumption.
