PARENTAL EXPECTATIONS AND ITS IMPACT ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS MEDIATED BY ACADEMIC SELF-CONCEPT AT SECONDARY LEVEL

Abstract:
This was aimed to explore the relationship of parental expectations and academic self-concept (academic confidence and academic effort) of students with students’ academic achievement with reference to gender. Population of the study was public and private secondary school students and their parents in Lahore district. 400 students and 80 parents were the sample of the study. Participants of the study were 9th and 10th grade students. Sample was selected on the bases of simple random sampling technique for selection of students and convenient sampling for selection of parents. Moreover, this study is an explanatory mixed method research. Three research instruments were used to collect data. Children’s Perceptions of Parents’ Academic Expectations (CPPAES) and Students academic self-concept was measured by using questionnaire of Parental Expectations and Liu and Wang’s (2005) Self-concept Scale (ASCS). An interview was conducted from parents to know their expectations regarding academic achievement of their children. Final exam grades were considered as Academic Achievement of students. Furthermore, Spearman’s Rho Correlation and Chi Square test were applied to analyze data. Results displayed that there was a significant and moderate relationship between Parental Expectations and Student’s Academic Achievement. Whereas, no significant relationship was realized between Academic Self-Concept of student and their Academic Achievement.
