Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the Herzberg’s (1959) motivator-hygiene factors, the extent of their variability and their relationship with male and female faculty member’s overall job satisfaction. A sample of 100 University faculty members of Rawalpindi and Islamabad was selected as a statistical frame. Instrumentation used for this study known as (Wood’s, 1973) “faculty satisfaction/Dissatisfaction Scale”. Wood’s instrument consisted of 64-items, six-point Likert scale. To determine the relationships between overall job satisfaction and job motivator-hygiene factors, correlation coefficients were calculated ranged between moderate to substantial (Davis,1971).Multiple regression divulges “Work Itself” and “Supervision” for females whereas “Work Itself” and “Growth” for males explained the variability among faculty’s overall job satisfaction.
In nutshell, both male and female faculty members in the universities are generally satisfied with their jobs and do not differ significantly. “Work Itself” and “Relationships” was the most motivating aspect for the male and female respectively and the least motivating factor was the “Salary”. The university administrators/Vice chancellors must improve on aforementioned prescribed areas along with investigating for further betterment in the system.
