Abstract:
Many universities implement outreach activities in which students organize workshops and lectures for local communities. While these activities provide valuable educational opportunities, they are often temporary initiatives limited to the period of university enrollment. As a result, the experiences gained through these activities frequently remain personal memories rather than continuing forms of social engagement.

This study examines the long-term development of a student-led outreach initiative called the Science Communication Project (SCP) and explores its potential as a platform for sustaining social participation beyond university education.

The Science Communication Project (SCP) was launched in 2006 as a community science program. Initially, the activities were organized mainly by instructors, but the project gradually evolved into a student-led initiative. Around 2010, a portable 3D projection system was developed to display astronomical educational content (4D2U), which was then introduced into outreach programs. From this stage onward, the instructor mainly focused on developing technological tools and educational materials, while students explained scientific concepts to participants. This division of roles naturally fostered student-centered science communication activities.

Over time, the project further developed through peer learning among students. Senior students transferred knowledge about workshop organization and communication strategies to junior students, forming a student-led learning community. At its peak, approximately twenty students participated in planning and conducting science and programming workshops, mainly requested by local science museums and parent associations of elementary schools. The educational value of these activities was recognized nationally, and the project received the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2013.

A particularly notable outcome of the project is that several former participants have continued the activities after becoming working professionals. Two alumni who played key roles in SCP during their student years later returned to organize programming workshops for children and young learners independently. This phenomenon suggests that participation in student-led science communication activities can foster long-term social engagement beyond university education.

This study aims to examine the twenty-year development of SCP and to explore how student-led outreach activities can evolve into a sustainable community connecting students, alumni, and local society. The findings suggest that designing educational environments that support student autonomy can transform short-term outreach activities into long-term community engagement.
