Abstract:
Computer science students entering higher education for the first time often have difficulties to cope with university life. The dropout rate is very high, we lost many students in the faculty of informatics after the first year. The aim is our program is to prevent students from dropping-out.
In this paper we are focusing on helping methods for students who struggle to develop studying skills, programming and learning mathematics. Our students feel a big gap between secondary school studies and university requirements. So we introduced a new lecture held by professionals to help our students. The title of the course is preparation course for university studies, which has two main parts. One of them is an intensive training session focusing on developing academic skills and competences held by psychologists. The other part is a group mentor program, which is a weekly session to help personally students with their difficulties.
In this study we would like to show the effect of our program on academic performance comparing those who participated it with those who didn’t.Keywords:
