Currently we witnessed a growing interest in applying personalization and adaptation in numerous application domains especially in education. Advanced information systems are styled in a way that enable users to quickly access information relevant for their needs. Through personalized learning system, it enables the most appropriate resources to be tailored to the learner’s needs. The core of personalized learning system is user model containing personal information such as knowledge, learning styles, goals which are necessary for personalized learning process. This literature review focuses on the user modeling in an adaptive educational hypermedia system. The aims of this document are to define what User Model is, and to overview existing User Model and Item Response Theory (IRT). In addition to that, this paper also outlines several issues related to user modeling for adaptive learning content. This motivates the author towards the research on user modeling which emphasized on semantic technology and the use of IRT for adaptive question selection.
